Final Assignment- 10 Revelations on Social Media Networking
1.
“Social media is built on a non-linear concept, unlike other
communications and entertainment mediums (Page 5).”
YOU HAVE
THE POWER
Before this class, I never realized the system behind social
media. We consume media in a non-linear way. In the world of social media, YOU
have a choice. YOU are free to say “no”. Now that I know what system social
media bases it on, I have found myself paying much more attention to
advertisements. For example, the advertisements displayed on my Facebook page
are all advertisements that appeal to me. These advertisements apply to me,
attract me, are personal, and are relevant to my lifestyle.
Here is a personal screen shot of my Facebook feed! Just recently
I had done some Cyber Monday shopping on American Eagle.
2.
“Social media is a true celebration of the individual (Page 14).”
CARE ABOUT
YOUR CONSUMER, NOT YOUR EGO
Before this class, I thought social media was a selfish thing.
When I say this I mean that I thought companies used social media as a way to
ONLY build up their brand. I did not think that social media focused on the
individual, to celebrate the individual. Working with many of the social media
applications such as Instagram, Twitter, and Blogger, I have come to realize
that everything you say and post is to attract the individual to want their
brand. When creating my social media for Paint A Change, I noticed that the
entire time all I cared about was what others thought of my idea and vision. I
wanted people to like genuinely like Paint A Change.
3.
“Social media is relatively new (Page 42).”
SOCIAL
MEDIA IS JUST A BABY!
Before this class, I never realized how new social media was. Throughout
this course I was able to reflect and think back to when social media really
became relevant in my life. MySpace was the first form of social media I ever
used. I began to follow the trend in 5th grade, however it was not
long until I upgraded to Facebook in 6th. I remember at the time my
cousins were in college, they would always tell me “Facebook is for college
students…not kids your age”. Thinking back, Facebook was still so new and
exciting, it was more popular than texting! 9 years ago Facebook was the only
source of social media I knew of, in only 9 years think of all of the different
sources we have!

4.
“The first and best way to find your audience is to let it find
you (Page 143).”
WANT CONSUMERS WHO WANT YOU
Paint And Sips are becoming one of
the new trends with my generation. It’s an excuse to drink wine with your
friends! People are constantly posting photos on Instagram with their huge
canvases and their big glasses of wine. However, some people who attend these
paint nights might not have one single artistic bone in their body, they might
just be in it for the drinks! Paint A Change is all about passion. We don’t
seek for people who don’t have a genuine passion for us. Personally, throughout
this course I have learned that I love the companies who love their customers
which is why all of my social media sites were strictly designed to attract
people who have the same interests as I do!
5.
“Celebrities have the ability to move mass amounts of people
toward a cause or movement or whatever it might be (Page 162).”
IT’S ALL
ABOUT WHO YOU KNOW
Celebrities are your key to success in any field. Here is a photo
of Miley Cyrus posing in a photo for The Happy Hippie Foundation. This foundation
aims to help the homeless and LGBT youth. Before Miley Cyrus got involved with
this organization, I had no idea it existed. This one example proves that
having a celebrity involved in a movement, foundation, or endorsement, helps
raise awareness and attracts people.
6. “Hash tag’s reflect the notion of keywords for search-engine
optimization (SEO) (Page 187).”
HASHTAGS
ARE KEY
I always knew what hash tags were but I did not know the
significance of them. I now know that hash tags help something to go viral, to
help something trend. A hash tag can help send your message to the entire
world. The SEO process maximizes the number of visitors to a website. It is a
smart idea for your campaign or company to have a # to go along with it. For example
#SHUSocialMedia, allows for all of the Sacred Heart students to view Sacred
Heart’s social media users.
7.“In general, video’s role in social media marketing is to
amplify a message (Page 203).”
VIDEOS HAVE
A VOICE
I believe that photos and video speak louder than reading words on
paper. Creating a video lets viewers see your vision come to life. For this
class we created an elevator pitch. In that elevator pitch I was able to voice
my social media for change project. In 45 seconds I was able to tell viewers
about my idea with body language and facial expression. If my social media for
change project were real, I would have invested in filming so that my message
could be presented even bigger.
8. “Blogging can be one of the most
important ways for marketers to communicate in today’s online world (Page 209).”
BLOGGING SPEAKS FOR YOU
In todays time it seems that people
prefer looks rather than quality. With that being said, your blog is the key to
attracting an audience. Your blog emulates your vision and speaks for you. How
you choose to format your blog will be the deciding factor of the type of
message you send. My social media for change project is aimed towards helping
children. Because of this I choose bright colors for my social media pages
rather than black and white because children are often fascinated by color.
However, if I were aiming my idea towards a crowd of people who were older I
would have more flexibility.
As you can see in this screen shot of
my blog page, I chose a yellow background with stars. I felt that this gave of
a very warm, child like vibe. I also chose the colors red and orange to
compliment my background.
9. “Three years on the
internet is almost the equivalent of a decade in other industries (Page 252).”
3 IS THE NEW 10
Going back to #3. In over a few years
so many other forms of social media have been introduced to consumers. Like I
said in #3 when I was in 6th grade, which was 9 years ago, all I knew
of were MySpace and Facebook. Now we have Instagram, Snapchat, VSCO, and so
many other forms that are constantly evolving and upgrading. There are so many
ways to for companies to market themselves. With all the forms of social media
created over the years, it is hard to imagine working in a field without it.
10. “I’m tempted to respond
by saying that the worst social media campaign ever run is one that’s not run
at all (Page 258).”
EVEN BAD IS
GOOD
With constant gossip on social media,
your campaign, advertisement, or message can never go completely wrong. For
example, Kim Kardashian’s Break The
Internet campaign published on the cover of Paper Magazine went viral once
it was published. So many people thought the photograph was just simply stupid
while others thought it was genius. Regardless of who thought what, it brought
attention to not only Kim but to Paper Magazine. Before that cover photo, I
never knew what Paper Magazine was, now it’s all I ever see advertised. The
negative and positive talk brought attention to the star and the company.
Whether it was a dumb idea or not, they got just what they wanted, conversation.
